Entering the Living Architecture of Wisdom

I remember walking into Westminster Cathedral in London, looking up, and being struck still by the vast beauty and scale of the architecture.

People milled around me, some even bumping into me, yet my face remained turned heavenward. I could not move. Eventually I noticed my body returning to its normal sense of size, as if I had taken a journey within that vastness without realizing it.

Wiping the tears flowing down my face, I smiled at my patient husband and we began our exploration.

Centuries of builders, artists, worshippers, and people from every walk of life had moved through that grand architecture. Many were buried within its walls. Others left artistic impressions and stories of their living legacy for me to witness.

Cathedrals have a way of right-sizing you.

You feel both vast and small at the same time.

This experience requires no belief or prescribed faith. It is a visceral sensory perception of wonder and belonging.

The Field of Feminine Intelligence, while vast and full, is not abstract. It too has architecture that can be sensed, related to, and lived within.

Via Sophia, the Way of Wisdom, unfolds within the architecture of this Field of Feminine Intelligence.

Without rigid structures or spiritual rules, you encounter living forms that appear as pattern, rhythm, and relationship. As you enter a relaxed and coherent state where perception softens, many women begin to notice that Life itself has shape. Movements repeat. Thresholds appear. Cycles of emergence and retreat unfold naturally.

When you begin to sense this architecture, you realize your life is not random.

You begin to see that you are already participating in phases and movements shaping your experience. In Via Sophia, the Feminine Spiral of Unfolding reveals these rhythms as they move through every area of your life.

Rather than a ladder of spiritual ascent, Via Sophia offers a spiral of lived participation.

This spiral reflects how life continually unfolds through phases such as softening, differentiation, expansion, coherence, release, integration, and renewed embodiment. These are not spiritual concepts to achieve, but expressions of the natural intelligence already organizing your life.

Discovering this rhythm and aligning with it brings a deep relaxation to the subtle undercurrent of striving many women quietly carry.

Within this architecture exists another circle-spiral of 13 Mystical Mothers.

Each Mystical Mother illuminates a distinct quality of embodied wisdom. They serve as relational doorways into Temple or Garden environments where particular aspects of Feminine Intelligence become easier to recognize and engage.

One temple may invite compassion.
Another awakens sovereignty.
Another reveals creativity, wildness, humor, or fierce love.

Walking the Way of Wisdom, Via Sophia, invites encounters that are lived experiences within a relational field rather than abstract teachings or distant figures.

The Wheel of Mystical Mothers offers orientation. The Feminine Spiral of Unfolding reveals movement.

Together they help you recognize where you are within the rhythms of your life and how to engage the moment with greater care and understanding.

Over time, something surprising becomes clear.

The architecture within the Field of Feminine Intelligence was never outside of you. It has always been alive within your own field of being.

Temples, gardens, thresholds, and bridges appear as perceptual environments through which intelligence becomes recognizable. They are not rigid structures, but relational spaces that arise as needed.

Just as a map can orient a traveler, these structures help you navigate experience.

The recorded journeys in the class archive provide easy access for exploration and navigation. Yet the terrain itself is always lived directly, and you remain the center of every architecture that appears to support your unfolding.

Via Sophia gently shifts your orientation from managing life to participating with it. From explaining reality to encountering it. From spiritual effort to Living Sacred.

I have explored the Via Sophia architecture intimately over many years, and I am often struck still and right-sized by the vastness and deeply human relational quality of each encounter.

While I still love entering grand cathedrals from time to time, I now recognize the same beauty and wonder within the living architecture of the Feminine Field of Intelligence present in everyday life.

Building Cathedrals The great cathedrals of Europe were not built by a single generation. Thousands of artisans, visionaries, masons, and glassmakers contributed their skill over decades, sometimes centuries. Many labored knowing they would never see the finished cathedral. Yet they carved, lifted, and shaped stone with devotion to a vision larger than themselves. These soaring structures were designed to awaken wonder, lifting the human gaze toward beauty and higher possibility. Cathedrals remind us that meaningful work often unfolds across time, and that when many people offer their gifts to a shared vision, something enduring and uplifting can take form.

A Horse Bumped My Heart

I’ve always had a distant relationship with horses.

I once rode the pony a friend cared for at a local barn when I was a pre-teen. I’ve done a few trail rides, including what felt like a few death-defying adventures in the Colorado Rockies. I even calmly steered my horse back onto the trail after she reared and raced down a small forest hill.

It was a natural instinct. After all, I’ve watched enough television to witness experienced equestrians deftly managing rearing horses.

Beyond admiring the beauty of horses, especially those running free, I’ve never had any interest in spending time with them. I admired my friends who cared for horses, offered equine-assisted therapy, and even rode into their forest wedding ceremony on their horses with a miniature “flower horse.”

When friends at Liberty Stables in Florida invited me to visit with their three horses, I was eager to witness their new project, which has brought much joy to their lives. Visiting the horses was part of my interest, but mostly it was my relationship with the humans that warmed my heart.

My ambivalence lifted with my first surprising meeting with Zor, a gorgeous Friesian horse who stands between 17 and 18 hands tall.

On a snowy day in New Jersey, I took a break in my comfy chair. Closing my eyes, I noticed the replay of a short “movie” I’d seen of Zor dancing with his previous trainer. He was magnificent, and the fluid interaction between horse and human was like a ballet that moved me deeply.

Suddenly, I saw Zor’s face in my inner sight appear directly in front of me. We were almost nose to nose.

As soon as I indicated a ‘hello and welcome,’ my chest warmed, my heart blew open, and the image disappeared. I stayed within that delicious experience for a while, now intrigued to meet Zor in person.

The first day at the barn, we were going to greet the horses and spend time with them in the paddocks. Liberty training offers the horse freedom in space and interaction with humans.

With four paddocks to choose from, the herd of three horses and three humans would spend time in territory together.

Entering the paddock with some trepidation, I was struck by how Zor towered over the other two horses. I was fully anticipating watching them graze from afar, so was surprised when Zor came directly toward me. I put my closed fist up for a possible greeting, like a fist bump to his nose, as instructed.

Almost immediately, Zor lowered his head and bumped his nose hard against my heart, pushing me back a step.

Contact established, power demonstrated, and heart connection activated, he wandered away to another paddock.

I, in the meantime, took a few moments to both welcome the greeting and calm my nervous system, which had activated with that push.

The afternoon was spent lazily relaxing in a chair beneath the shade of a tree. 



Eyes closed, perception widened, I listened to the breeze in the trees, the bird song, and the sounds of the horses grazing. At times, a horse would come to stand behind us, presencing the harmony felt within the natural world and our bodies.

I felt like I took a nap without sleeping.

I enjoyed watching my daughter and friend brush the horses, always keeping my respectful distance. I squatted before the smallest horse as he ate his hay and had a lovely exchange through both spoken language and inner awareness. All in all, it was a lovely day.

Two days later, I woke up with genuine excitement as I couldn’t wait to spend time with Zor. I was surprised by feelings of strong affection and even a bit of inner longing.

Upon arrival, I was immediately greeted by one of the smaller horses. Again, a nose-to-heart bump, followed by a lovely exchange.

Once these niceties were complete, I made a beeline for Zor. I noticed my delight and respect. Even as I was careful of my position given his size, the intimidation of the previous day was gone.

As I dry brushed his coat, chatting with him, I was struck by the intimate, relational nature of the encounter.

Here was this enormous animal, power incarnate, demonstrating the same comfort with me as I was feeling with him.

Once brushed, Zor walked away to roll around on the ground before returning to me for yet another brushing session.

Laughter, care, and increasing familiarity left me conversing with Zor on multiple levels. Chatting aloud with him and others around us often seemed to narrate the quiet exchange we were having beneath the surface.

When an afternoon snack of hay was delivered, he received my offer of energy healing.  Instinctively, we worked together. It was quiet, clear, and intimate.

Later that evening, I saw some photos my friends had taken of us during this healing exchange.

It struck me fully then what I had experienced but had not fully realized at the time. After a lifetime of indifference or intimidation around horses, I was completely at ease and confident in my interactions with Zor. Beyond comfort was a full-body sense of delight within the beautiful “territory.”

I realized then that this wasn’t about skill development or even courage in the face of a really huge horse.

It was coherence.

Horses respond to the state you are presenting. When the heart, breath, and nervous system settle into rhythm, the body becomes steady. Nature is naturally coherent, and horses, finely attuned to the natural field, recognize coherence.

When you arrive in the ‘field’ or ‘territory’  open, present, and steady, you naturally enter deeper states of coherence.

Beyond your own nervous system relaxation and expanded perception is the dance between other coherent systems: birds, horses, pasture, breeze.

Upon reflection, I recognized there was a mutual reading of one another’s state of being that allowed trust to arise. The connection with Zor revealed itself between us in the relational space enhanced within coherence. Trust was established rapidly, and a relationship formed.

My last moments with Zor were outside of his stall after he enjoyed his snack of watery green nutrition.

I had a hard time saying goodbye. He tried time and time again to give me that hard nose bump to my heart. Given his dripping green snout, we settled for ear scratching.



Coherence exists naturally. When you relax enough to meet life within it, you begin to notice the quiet harmony already unfolding all around and within you.

You don’t need to hang out with horses to discover the way in to coherence. Time in nature is often an easy way to explore harmony within and without. Is healing with horses for you? Growing research continues to highlight the healing potential of horses. Equine-assisted programs are now being used with veterans experiencing PTSD, children with autism, and individuals recovering from trauma, anxiety, and depression. Studies suggest that the presence of horses can help regulate the nervous system, build trust, and strengthen emotional awareness. Because horses are highly sensitive to human body language and physiological states, they offer immediate, nonjudgmental feedback that supports self-regulation and connection. Many therapeutic programs report improvements in confidence, social skills, and emotional resilience, reminding us that meaningful healing relationships can sometimes begin in the quiet company of animals.

Via Sophia. Modern Woman. Ancient Path.

I have been reading a series of novels set in the late nineteenth century that portray the social structures women were expected to live within. 



Hardships were often hidden behind social niceties, beautiful homes, fashionable clothing, and the polite manner considered fitting for a lady of society. A woman’s ability to enjoy simple pleasures such as reading freely, choosing her friendships, or expressing her opinions was often restricted by her husband. Abuse was tolerated, and the risk of being sent to an asylum for “hysteria” was real if a woman challenged the status quo or stood in the way of an affair. 



If they were fortunate, women in those times found ways to connect with one another, offer support, and quietly explore meaning beneath the surface of their lives. 



Some women even learned how to play the social game skillfully. They fulfilled the expectations placed upon them while privately recognizing the petty absurdities woven into many of the rituals of polite society. 



The modern woman may no longer face the threat of institutionalization for her independence or passionate expression, yet every era carries its own challenges. 



I see how much many of you are navigating so many challenges at once. Family, work, relationships, and a wide range of responsibilities often overlap.
When you are raising children, managing a household, preparing teenagers for college, and supporting aging parents, it is easy to feel stretched thin and quietly undernourished.

Perhaps you recognize this feeling yourself. The sense that life is full and meaningful, yet something within you is asking for more depth, more space, or a quieter kind of wisdom.

Current culture asks a great deal of you. Performance, efficiency, and constant self-improvement are often held up as measures of success. These expectations are not only exhausting. They can slowly erode self-trust and create confusion about how to live in alignment with your own inner knowing. 



Beneath this pressure, another message quietly circulates. 



If you cannot manage it all gracefully, perhaps something is wrong with you. If you are still searching for meaning, perhaps you should try harder, optimize more, or elevate yourself spiritually.

Yet beneath the noise and speed of modern life, something older continues to move.

Steady and persistent. It does not hurry. It does not compete. It simply waits to be noticed.

Will you listen to me? A growing body of communication research highlights the power of truly listening to one another. University of Mississippi professor Graham Bodie teaches a skill he calls Listening Intelligence, helping people recognize the different ways we naturally listen and where our blind spots may be. Through research and classroom practice, he shows that listening is not passive but an active, learnable skill that deepens understanding and empathy. When people become more aware of how they listen, conversations shift. Curiosity grows, misunderstandings soften, and connection strengthens. Developing listening intelligence reminds us that one of the most meaningful gifts we can offer another person is our genuine attention.

Via Sophia: Embodying the Mystical Feminine

Via Sophia has arrived.

This “Way of Wisdom” offers an invitation to step upon a Living Spiral Path and discover a new understanding of what it means to embody the Mystical Feminine.

For the past fifteen years I have lived and taught within the Mystical Feminine. I have sat within many circles and immersions with women as we explored how to practically and powerfully engage Feminine wisdom in everyday life.

Listening deeply to the voices of women walking this path, I noticed something important. 



As women partnered with the Mystical Mothers as loving resources, they discovered kinder ways of living. Trust in Life increased. Trust in the Mothers deepened. And trust in their own inner capacity began to grow.

Yet even with these beautiful discoveries, I continued to see something else. 



Women still struggled with self improvement, the pressure to elevate their spiritual approach, and the endless effort of managing complex lives. Greater peace and compassion were present, yet effort, discouragement, and self judgment often remained.

You’re aware that modern culture trains us women to be productive, accomplished, and constantly giving to others, often at our own expense. 



Many of us quietly carry fatigue, fragmentation, and a subtle erosion of trust in ourselves. It becomes difficult to recognize the natural rhythm of your life when societal expectations are loud and certainty about success is constantly proclaimed.

And then Via Sophia arrived.

Not as a dramatic revelation, but as a quiet whisper pointing toward something deeper beneath cultural conditioning, spiritual expectations, and the constant narration of a busy mind.

I listened closely because I sensed there was more to the path of the Mystical Feminine than I had yet recognized.

What emerged was an ancient orientation toward life that is relational, cyclical, embodied, creative, and inseparable from the natural world. Via Sophia honors rhythm over urgency. Integration over reaction. Depth over display.

As I explored this Way of Wisdom, I discovered that the less I tried to manage my life, the more Life revealed itself.

Far from becoming passive, I learned how to participate directly with the natural rhythm moving through the phases of my own life.

Something changed within my work as well.

As women gathered and slowly relaxed together, nervous systems settled and perception naturally expanded. Within that quiet coherent field, clarity returned. Self trust strengthened. Capacity widened. With less effort, women began to align gently and steadily with what was most important.

When striving softens, you begin to recognize the deeper rhythm already moving through your life.

Via Sophia: Embodying the Mystical Feminine was born from this lived recognition.

Researchers from the University of Otago explored the connection between lifestyle choices and well-being.  Survey data from over 1,000 New Zealand adults recealed that people who embraced simpler, more sustainable ways of living reported greater happiness and life satisfaction.  “Voluntary simplicity” shifts focus away from constant consumption and toward experiences that foster connection, such as community gardens, shared resources, and collaborative exchanges.  Researchers noted, “It’s not directly the commitment to material simplicity that leads to well-being, but the psychological and emotional need for fulfillment that derives from relationships, social connection, community involvement and a sense of living a purposeful and meaningful life.”

One Question Changed Everything

When my daughter was in eighth grade, she and her Girl Scout troop were beginning to explore ideas for their individual Silver Award projects.

Around our dinner table, we tossed around possibilities. Nothing landed. Nothing stirred real interest. So we encouraged her to do what we have always trusted. Stay open. Listen. Pay attention to what people are talking about in the world.

Often, the idea that will matter most arrives sideways.

That moment came when we listened to Ahaji Schreffler speak about her experience volunteering in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. She told the story of meeting Gabriel and the children of Love Orphanage.

Gabriel, who is Haitian, had been working as a translator in Miami, bringing volunteer groups to Haiti. In the aftermath, he returned to check on his family. What he encountered broke his heart and changed the course of his life.

Countless children were orphaned, hungry, and traumatized.

So Gabriel stayed and opened Love Orphanage with almost nothing. One room and three malnourished children.

After Ahaji’s presentation, my daughter asked if we could speak with her. While she wanted to learn more, there was one question she couldn’t shake. She asked how the children were doing in school.

Ahaji paused and gently explained that none of the children had ever been to school.

I will never forget the look on my daughter’s face as she turned toward me, eyes wide, silently asking if that could really be true.

It was a moment of lost innocence, one of many in a lifetime. When the realization that what you assumed was “normal” is not universal. That access to education, something she took for granted, is a privilege many children never receive.

On the drive home, she asked a simple question. “Mom, do you think it would be possible to send these kids to school?”

That question became her Girl Scout Silver Award project and the beginning of what is now the Be a Difference Maker education program.

That first year, every eligible child at Love Orphanage was enrolled in private school. They received uniforms, backpacks, books, and sneakers. A small library was created in the home, complete with art supplies and space for creative expression.

In the years that followed, her Girl Scout Gold Award project expanded the original vision.

Not only did the Be a Difference Maker program support sustainable education, it also funded four summers of Culture Camp experiences and planted the early seeds for vocational training.

Our entire family and all the Difference Makers who traveled to Love Orphanage for Culture Camp witnessed the impact first hand. We all were irrevocably changed.



Fast forward to today. 



According to We The Village’s 2025 Annual Summary, this year marks the thirteenth consecutive year that every child at Love Orphanage has had access to private education through the Be a Difference Maker program. All thanks to the generosity of so many Difference Makers.

That fact alone is extraordinary in a country where most families cannot afford school, where poverty is widespread, and most people live on just a few dollars a day amid ongoing civil unrest.

Today, there are nineteen children at Love Orphanage.

They are healthy, healed from trauma and malnutrition, and fully capable of love, joy, play, and connection.

And they have grown up knowing something essential – that Gabriel, Rodeline, and the Haitian volunteers love them and consistently work so that they may live well.

They also know that people across the ocean, most of whom they’ve never met, care enough to support their education, wellbeing, and possibility for a future.

 

In conversation with Ahaji and my daughter, it became clear that the long-term sustainability of the children’s education depended upon committed educational sponsorship through the Be a Difference Maker program.

Our family knows this firsthand.

We have had the quiet joy of sponsoring children through Love Orphanage over the years. Whether a special memorial or our monthly contributions, we recognize something wonderful is happening across the ocean. 



Children in green school uniforms are safely seated at desks, learning, growing, and being given a chance at a future that includes independence and meaningful work.

It is remarkably simple to make this happen. And I really hope you consider this.

For us, this decision is easy. We have participated in every aspect of the program over the years, including the time spent in Haiti with Gabriel and the children. Those experiences brought a richness to our lives that has stayed with us and continues to keep us connected to this beautiful extended family.



Most of you do not know Gabriel, whom I affectionately call the Angel Gabriel for his extraordinary heart and commitment. You have not stood in the courtyard with these children or watched them laugh and play. 



If you visit the Be a Difference Maker page and view the Culture Camp slideshows, you will see something important.

You will see healthy, vibrant, joyful children. Ordinary children living a life very different from most children in the United States. They are thriving because people chose to care about them.

Today, we are looking for 14 Difference Makers (people) to sponsor a child’s education for one year.

There are two ways to do this: A monthly automatic contribution of $30, or a one-time donation of $350, which covers private school tuition, uniforms, shoes, and books for the year.

This support also helps sustain vocational training for the older children who have graduated from high school.

14 people. That is all it takes to sustain the Be a Difference Maker Educational Program for the year ahead.

All contributions are processed through We The Village, the nonprofit organization created by Ahaji Schreffler solely to support the children of Love Orphanage. Here is their mission: “We The Village uplifts the lives of children at Love Orphanage by supporting education, living essentials, and safe space for living and learning.”

A key 2025 goal for We the Village was to expand health education for our adolescents. Here is the update: “We were thrilled to bring this vision to life. With the support of a Haitian nurse experienced in community health work in the Dominican Republic, we developed a series of engaging health education videos focused on sexual and reproductive health. These videos were thoughtfully designed to be age-appropriate, accessible, and culturally relevant. Our adolescents responded with enthusiasm, asking thoughtful questions and expressing interest in future topics that matter to them. We are proud to continue building on this work and plan to expand the project further in 2026.”

Care within the Cold Dark Winter

Driving into Soul Sanctuary last weekend, I noticed the trees were engaged in a wild dance.

I should have paid closer attention as I got out of the car, because the wind nearly took me with it. Walking to the door, I had to lean in and brace myself for a moment just to stay upright. The cold whipped through my clothes and found every uncovered space, sharing its bone-numbing chill.

I’m a bit over the cold, dark days of winter. And it’s only the beginning of February.

I wondered how a child who grew up playing and skiing in the snow could become an adult who avoids the cold like a hot potato.

I’m not alone in feeling that this winter has been long and unrelenting. The cold settled in, the snow kept arriving, and the darkness has lingered a bit too long. I’ve noticed that people who usually move, walk, and gather are sharing a quiet resistance toward going outside.

It’s not dramatic. More like a deep reluctance to push against what is already heavy.

It shows up when you don’t want to go out. You don’t want to muster and you want to stay within the comfort of home. Yet, alongside that is a missing of being outside, walking and breathing, and moving through the world more freely.

I’ve been thinking about how comfort soothes dark and cold times, both with weather and with the circumstances of life.

In Norway, there are months when sunlight disappears almost entirely. People don’t fight the inevitable. They prepare, adapt, and even celebrate the dark cold. They cultivate warmth in their homes with candles, roaring fires, and hearty soups. They strap headlamps on and walk to meet friends at a café or pull bundled-up children on sleds to family gatherings.

Some brave souls even gather at the sea, entering frigid water with hardiness and laughter as a communal ritual. While the thought makes me shudder, I appreciate the reminder that aliveness, in any weather, can be celebrated.

In my neck of the woods, people have grown used to mild winters and a few days of melting snow.

Persistent cold invites retreat inward. In some ways, this mirrors the season of Winter itself. A time to slow down, enjoy the quiet, and allow the body to restore. This is where seeds of inspiration are nourished, waiting for warmer days and heightened energy.

When moods, energy, physical activity, and social engagement dip, there is often a quiet, or not so quiet, voice that says something is wrong.

That you should be handling things better, staying upbeat, being more productive, or pushing through some imagined standard.

What if that story isn’t true? What if this long, dark, cold stretch is asking for a different kind of care, one that doesn’t require justification?

Caring well for yourself in winter invites honoring how your internal rhythms are moving and what you genuinely require at this time.

It’s a season when your system may be conserving energy or seeking comfort because conditions are demanding. Responding accurately means noticing this rather than overriding it. Winter invites choosing warmth, beauty, and pleasure without apologizing for them or framing them as indulgence.

Comfy clothes. Time under blankets. Home-cooked meals. Less socializing and more contemplation.

For most, this isn’t the season for optimization. Winter is the season for tending.

 

You might find yourself drawn to slower mornings, softer lighting, heavier blankets, and food that takes time.

You might want fewer conversations but deeper ones. You might want to read instead of scroll, sit by a window instead of pushing yourself out into the cold, or let your evenings close down naturally rather than staying artificially bright and busy.

It’s also important to discern whether you’re enjoying winter and thriving in the cold, or pushing yourself to maintain a rhythm that’s easier with light and warmth. People vary. It helps to know where you land.

Layered beneath this cold, snowy weather is another kind of winter.

Looking out into the world right now, the climate feels harsh in more ways than one. Division, outrage, harm to people and the environment, and unsettling news create a sense that something essential is being strained or torn.

Witnessing the state of the world can feel like a long season with no clear thaw in sight.

That makes personalized care even more important, not less.

Choosing comfort, warmth, and nourishment, if that’s what’s called for, makes good sense.

It’s wise to harmonize your nervous system, calm your mind, and soothe your emotions. This is how you remain capable of kindness, discernment, and presence when the world feels loud and fractured.

Care doesn’t have to be dramatic. It can be quietly pleasing.

A candle lit for no reason. A meal that actually satisfies. An early night without explanation. A conversation that feels human instead of performative.

You don’t need to earn these things by being productive first. You don’t need to frame them as self-improvement. You are simply responding to Winter as Winter, living in a way that matches your preference and bandwidth.

Movement will return, of course. Light is already on its way. Cold and snow will soften, and days outside will become more inviting.

But those days have not arrived yet. Don’t jump ahead or live as if they have. There’s something deeply supportive about being in sync with your inner rhythm in every season. When you’re not, strain builds inside and everything outside feels harder.

This cold, dark, often windy season asks you to stay close to yourself.

To tend the small hearths of your life in ways that feel pleasing and comforting.

And if you worry that you’re withdrawing too much from the world, be at peace.

This is a time to inhabit the way you’re called to live right now. Close, warm, and true to yourself.

There will be a time to turn outward again. Listen for the inner urge, but there’s no need to move before you’re ready.

Enjoy this time if you can. Seasons change. Light returns. And warmth is always generated from within.

Winter may slow you down. Yet it is a time where movement matters. Even 15 minutes a day of some exercise or body movement that is pleasing has beneficial impact. Sure, gym time works. But dancing with the dog, kids, or partner works. So does yoga, chi gong, or walking the mall. If you add some favorite music and even a movement buddy, life may seem lighter even in the darker days. Good nutrition, enough sleep, and Vitamin D or sunshine (even through the window) are good for a winter body. A rousing game of monopoly, scrabble, or freeze dance can do wonders for a winter mood.

Milo, the Snowstorm, and a Small Lie

We recently had a big snow in my neck of the woods.

Everyone was hunkered down. The fridge was full, chicken soup was bubbling on the stove, and my book pile sat patiently on the coffee table. As the snow covered the neighborhood and the plows dumped fresh mounds over our carefully shoveled walk, we took turns peeking outside.

As a kid, snowstorms were pure joy.

The neighborhood gathered as we went sledding and built snow forts until someone’s mom called us in for hot chocolate or hot maple syrup poured onto pristine snow. After drying off in front of the fire, we played Monopoly until the next outdoor adventure began.

These days, naps and shoveling are more my speed.

“It’s still snowing,” my husband reported for the umpteenth time. Milo, with his nose pressed against the glass, stared longingly at the winter wonderland. After a while, the whole scene became a bit ridiculous.

So I channeled my inner child, bundled up, and took Milo sledding.

It was great fun, the two of us flying down a snowy hill on speedy discs, snow spraying everywhere. You can see for yourself that Milo was living his best winter life.

Except for one thing. At fourteen, Milo is deaf. He can’t walk down steps and he got stuck in the snow the last time he went outside.

So no, we didn’t go sledding.

I’m still laughing at the image I created using Milo’s post-bath photo with the help of ChatGPT. In the midst of all the controversy about AI, it felt worth remembering that a funny image can just be funny, even if it isn’t real.

These days, fake images and fabricated narratives are everywhere. That’s the moment we’re living in, and it will only become more apparent as people become more skilled with AI.

Humans making things up is not new. Civilization itself runs on shared fictions.

Myth, metaphor, theater, religion, advertising, etiquette, fashion, money, nations, marriage rituals, résumés, bedtime stories, polite smiles, academic theories, and social media bios are all constructed narratives. What has changed is the scale, speed, and reach of how stories travel. 

So how do you go forward from here?

When I listen to people talk about AI, I hear fear, anger, excitement, and certainty, often all at once. There’s a lot of positional shouting about whether we’re headed for collapse or a shiny new golden age. 

I’ve wanted to slow it down a bit. Not the technology itself. I’m not in charge of that. Just my own response to its obvious presence in the world.

These days, I’m practicing discernment in earnest.

I’m not dismissing everything and I’m not swallowing everything whole. 


Humans have always told stories to entertain, protect, educate, market, control, delight, convert, and create.

It’s complicated. So I’ve simplified it for myself with three questions.



First Question: What’s the intent? Why is this story being told?



Some stories are playful. They invite humor, imagination, or connection. Milo’s wild ride in the snow lives here. No one was harmed or misled.



Some stories are protective, using humor as a shield or storytelling as a way to hold a boundary.



And some stories are manipulative. They seek advantage at another’s expense, meant to sell, control, inflame, extract, or deceive. Our world is full of these narratives, and with AI, they can be harder to spot.



Still, it’s worth remembering that AI doesn’t create intent. Humans bring intent to the tool.



Second Question: What’s the context? Where does this story live and with whom?



A fabricated image meant to delight is not the same as one used to distort consent, truth, or power.

Absurdity works on a playground or a stage. Metaphor belongs in art and education. Accuracy matters in medicine, courts, and aviation.



The same story can be harmless in one context and dangerous in another.

Right now, we’re living with massive context collapse.



When everything arrives on our screens looking equally important, information easily loses its framing, expertise, and relational cues. The answer isn’t to believe everything or to decide nothing can be trusted. 



Discernment asks us to strengthen our contextual literacy.



Third Question: Who holds the power? Who benefits if this is believed? Who is impacted but can’t be heard?



A joke between friends isn’t the same as a narrative imposed on a population. The real danger isn’t fabrication itself. It’s distortion amplified by imbalance.



I understand fear and anger as responses to this messy moment, especially as people worry about the impact of AI on artists, livelihoods, education, the environment, and more.

But fear collapses discernment and anger flattens nuance.

Both push humans toward extremes and give away agency faster than any technology ever could.



Discernment, by contrast, requires a calm nervous system and a willingness to pause.

It asks simple questions: What’s being claimed? Who’s speaking? In what context? And what is being asked of me as I take this in?



As a wise human, you’re capable of asking these questions and choosing your response, including the choice to wait when something isn’t clear.



As for outsourcing creativity, critical thinking, or personal agency, that’s a human decision, not a demand made by AI. So it’s important to think for yourself before handing over that task to AI.



AI is very good at analytical intelligence: pattern recognition, extrapolation, prediction, optimization. Humans participate in a different kind of intelligence when they aren’t overwhelmed or constantly narrating experience. This natural intelligence arises through presence, attunement, coherence, relationship, and timing.



AI works with explicit pattern memory. Humans participate in living systems rich with nuance and meaning.



AI is a tool, an interface, a resource. It is not a human, a guru, a friend, or a conscience.

You choose how to use it, or not. You don’t have to hand over your agency, creativity, or natural intelligence to use a powerful tool.



Smiling at a picture of my dog wildly sledding down a snowy hill doesn’t diminish your capacity to create art, learn something new, share kindness, commune with nature, or embody wisdom.



So with all the harmful intent that has always existed in human history, remember this: don’t abandon your intelligence, your creativity, your heart, or your capacity to choose.



Stay curious. Stay relational. Stay human.

Name Brands

“I think we need to be friends.”

Those were the first words out of my mouth when I introduced myself to Rev. Hilda Covington. We’d just finished a county meeting of nonprofit mental health and social service agencies. She was the presenter that month.

We almost didn’t meet because Hilda arrived an hour and a half late to a two-hour meeting.

I later learned that Hilda moves through the world in her own time. That meeting was not the first she was late to, nor the last. But she lit up that room when she introduced her agency, SisterHood, or “Sisters in the Hood,” as the founders named themselves when they decided to serve the families in their neighborhood who were often overlooked or dismissed by traditional systems.

I was immediately taken by her light-hearted, warm-hearted, big-hearted way.

Having spent so many years with communities society loves to marginalize, I recognized a kindred spirit. I went up to thank her for her humorous and honest presentation, and those unexpected words just came out. I’m forever grateful they did.

Fast forward 27 years.

By now, I’ve learned to listen when something unexpected tumbles out of my mouth. Time and again, I’ve watched the Soul guide me into the right moment, the right person, the right doorway. You know how that works — the quiet nudge that opens a relationship that reshapes your life and deepens your understanding of yourself and the world.

Becoming friends with Hilda did exactly that.

We live very different lives. Our beliefs about the bigger picture diverge. Our thinking was shaped by very different worlds. Our ways of serving look similar on the outside but arise from distinct lineages and lived experience.

We speak an entirely different language.

I grew up with a felt sense of safety she never had access to. We were raised a generation apart, with differences in race, class, neighborhood, education, and economic stability.

These differences have paved the way for deep, often uncomfortable, always meaningful conversations.

My mother used to tell me a story from when we lived in Germany. I was a preschooler playing in a sandbox with a little girl who spoke an entirely different language. We chattered and played as if we understood every word.

Lunch with Hilda feels like that sandbox.

I walk in unsure what the conversation will bring — seeking her counsel, planning a project, or checking in about a neighborhood need — and I always end up on a winding path through delight, discomfort, insight, and truth.

She shows me the world I cannot see. I do the same for her.

Looking back, the hidden gem of that first encounter was discovering I can enter another’s world without defense.

With Hilda, I could bring both my knowledge and my ignorance.

I could let myself be disturbed without collapsing. I could grow beyond the ideas that once kept me small. I learned to listen past the familiar and allow my Soul to point toward the beliefs that needed to be uprooted.

To be fully accepted — and to offer that same acceptance — is a rare grace.

Despite all our differences, we share the same kind of heart. And thankfully, the same sense of humor. That lightness has carried us through years of challenges, tragedies, and triumphs in her community. It is often through her laughter that my eyes open just a little wider.

A few years ago, I called to wish her a happy birthday. Quarantine had kept us from our lunches, but she was still tending to her community and her flock. (Yes, she’s also a pastor.)

“Kathy! Your people collected so much food!”

Turns out it wasn’t my volunteer contact who told her about our Sidewalk Food Drive. It was the neighborhood.

“Pastor! Your friend delivered food. Name brands!”

I didn’t understand at first.

Hilda laughed and shared story after story about the excitement of receiving name-brand groceries — not the cheap knock-offs typically stocked in dollar stores or donated to poor families. Her joy carried an edge of truth that cut straight through me.

The inequity of our neighborhoods, our expectations, our lived experience landed in my body.

When our call was done, the tears came. Gratitude mixed with heartache.

Another glimpse into a world I don’t live in but care about deeply.

For 27 years, our Soul Sanctuary community has supported SisterHood families in countless ways. What started as a small intention — easing the financial burden of economically disadvantaged parents so they could have a little more room to breathe and be with their children — has rippled far beyond anything I imagined.

A bit of relief. A moment of peace. A chance to read, play, or talk together. Small shifts with long-term impact.

I could tell so many stories of how your generosity helped parents and soothed children, but those stories belong to them. What I can say is this:

When you show up for people, they become “your people.” Period.

Next week, my family will deliver a few car loads of toys and gifts to SisterHood volunteers for the Holiday Giving List — 450 children and teens this year.

My basement looks like the North Pole and an Amazon warehouse had a love child.

This Sunday (12/14), we’ll gather at Soul Sanctuary’s Holiday Open House and collect any last-minute gifts you feel called to offer.

Last week, my husband and I took Hilda and another SisterHood founder, Linda, out to celebrate Hilda’s 80th birthday. We laughed, reminisced, and honored the years of shared work, heartbreak, joy, and community.

So as we wrap up this year’s Holiday Gift Drive, please receive the gratitude of Hilda, the SisterHood volunteers, and the families whose lives you touch.

The greatest “brand name” you can offer another human being is to call them sister or brother — to recognize their belonging in your human family.

For every way you show up, in any neighborhood, for any people, in your own authentic way,

The world needs exactly what you bring.

Uncertainty. A Traveling Companion

When standing at a crossroad in your life, it’s natural to seek answers.

To search for certainty about your next steps. To want assurance that the decision you are making will lead you in the right direction, with the best possible outcome.

So you think through the pros and cons. You talk with trusted people. You consider expert advice. You scroll the web and social media for guidance. Maybe you even check in with your own heart and soul.

And still, you can’t know exactly where this choice will lead you.

Eventually, after all the thinking and seeking, there comes a moment when it’s just you and this one guest that refuses to leave: Uncertainty.

The two of you sit quietly together, perhaps over a cup of tea.

You feel the mix of discomfort and excitement. The longing for clarity. The ache to know for sure that everything will work out beautifully.

But as you spend time with Uncertainty, something unexpected happens.

Your anxiety softens.
Your mind loosens its grip.
Your Heart begins to speak.

Quieter now, more spacious, you can hear the subtle conversation unfolding between your Heart and this mysterious companion.

They talk about the wonder of discovery and the potential for extraordinary growth.

Your Heart remembers the countless times you’ve navigated challenges with grace, strength, and grit.

Uncertainty gently reminds your Heart to trust itself completely.

Together, they soothe the body.

Worry loosens. New possibilities flicker. A different kind of courage rises.

Somehow, without trying, your Heart and Uncertainty become allies — fellow adventurers in this next chapter of your life.

And as the two of them finish their tea and begin packing for the journey ahead, your Heart notices an extra bag sitting nearby. It’s already packed and glowing softly.

“Who owns that bag?” your Heart asks.

“Oh, that one?” Uncertainty smiles.

Your Heart relaxes, remembering the truth it keeps forgetting:  You never walk alone.

So you gather yourself.
Take a breath.
Feel your feet on the ground.

You may not know what this path will look like, but you trust your companions — Heart, Soul, and even Uncertainty. Especially Uncertainty.

With a little spark in your step, you begin.

Not because you know exactly where you’re going,
but because everything you need is already within you.

The Art of Nourishment


Life has a rhythm. It speeds up and slows down according to mysterious forces.

Your personal rhythm dances with the celestial bodies, seasons of the year, developmental phases, and the pulse of your Soulful evolutionary process. Living in harmony with these rhythms is in many ways hard to understand as it is a complicated and deeply personal process.

Your rhythm dances with everyone’s rhythm in the grand Cosmic Dance.

There is a Way of living in harmony, ease, and joy. Yet, most people in society have lost their rhythm and, thus, the wisdom of how to flow harmoniously each day.

No one is to blame here. It’s a natural side effect of technological and societal progress.

Most of you are living in comfortable homes, commuting on well established roadways or railways or airways, purchasing food and clothing from big box stores, and having anything delivered (quickly) to your door. Electric lights, 9-5 work days, 24 hour connectivity, news accessible at your fingertips, and a polluted environment has disconnected you from nature and the natural rhythms.

All of this has you moving fast. Perhaps thinking fast. Feeling fast. Eating fast. Relating fast. Getting bored fast.

The requirements of living, working, playing, and achieving as fast paced humans leaves little time for noticing Life’s natural rhythms.

Let along moving in sync with them.

When you move at a fast pace or spend your slow times recovering with social media or streaming shows, you don’t perceive the information the Cosmos is offering you.

You miss the clues and invitations that support the cultivation of a vital life imbued with meaning and joy.

When you’re dancing in tune with Life’s rhythms, you recognize when to dream, create, and produce. And when to rest, receive, and rejuvenate.

Life holds all speeds and levels of intensity. You’ve experienced this continuum.

At times, you’re drinking out of a fire hose there is so much going on. Other times, you are floating down the lazy river without a care nor desire in the world. And all things in between.

When you’re consciously aware of the rhythm, you join in with awareness since you understand how to dance.

Yet, when you’re moving within the societal schedule of movement, production, and achievement (in every category of living), you’re typically out of sync with the natural rhythm. So times of intensity may be too stressful and slowness may leave you bored or uncomfortably feeling you should be doing something productive.

Imagine if you were so in tune with your own being as part of the Earthly and Cosmic ecosystem that you knew when to move or still.

You’d recognize when to dream in unison with your Soul, create from the fire in your belly, or slowly savor the beauty of everyday existence. You’d know when it is time to replenish a tired system, strengthen a personal relationship, or explore a new area of learning.

The clues or signposts Life always offers would be bright and easy to read so your path was clear, enjoyable, and, dare I say, magical.

How then do you return to noticing and living in sync with the Soulful intersection of your personal rhythm and that of Life? It requires deep nourishment, stepping off the mind numbing treadmill, and leaving the box of habitual living.

It begins with you and you can begin right now. One simple breath gets you through that doorway.

Society (and every expert) can always tell you how to behave and what is normal. Living that way is a rhythm buster for sure. Yet, what way of living is right for you? The wise one residing within knows this answer if you give her/him/them a chance to emerge.

Begin with 30 seconds or 1 minute. Practice building your nourishing attentiveness to yourself in the moment and environment you’re actually in. 5 minutes. 1 hour. 1 day. 1 weekend.

Imagine that. Small practices creatively applied throughout each day lead to a shedding mind numbing, body tiring, and Soul tightening habits. Awakening you to a spacious exploration of your interaction with self, other, time, place, dreams, and limits.

There is no set path, practice, or prescription that works magically for everyone.

A few key components such as slowing down, engaging curiosity, reconnecting with nature, inviting self enjoyment, communing with the Sacred, and exploring what feels good or right for you are important. Even these vary person by person or day by day for an individual.

Think of this as more of a game in the neighborhood than a goal oriented work task. Have fun. Explore something new.

Stepping out of habitual living and societal conditioning doesn’t mean you quit your job, miss your kid’s soccer games, or forget to feed your family.

Rather, it’s the embarking upon a free for all discovery of what brings you into a sense of vital aliveness, sense of wonder, deep peace, loving exchange, and enthusiasm for the moment however magical or mundane.

In time, you’ll begin to notice the synchronistic invitation to dance with what is meant for you.
